Career & Technical Education Introduction

Career and Technology Education, Introduction is Utah’s introductory level Career and Technical Education Core Curriculum requirement for middle/junior high school.  The total program began in 1987 and is designed as a one-year/one-credit course to help 7th grade learners explore various careers.  The CTE, Intro program is typically taught by three teachers, with the guidance counselor delivering specific career guidance activities. Through this activity-centered curriculum students are exposed to careers in the following content areas:

  • Agriculture
  • Business
  • Career Development and Guidance
  • Health Care Careers
  • Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Marketing
  • Personal Finance
  • Technology & Engineering

CTE Introduction integrates three major concepts throughout the program:

Understanding their future role as a worker and a family member.
Becoming aware of those life skills necessary to be a contributing member of society.

Education and Occupation Exploration
Exploring the nature of work and the changing world of work.
Exploring nontradtional as well as traditional roles.
Experiencing broad exposure to technologies and processes found in the workplace.
Examining high-growth and emerging occupations.

Career Planning
Understanding the importance of education and occupational decision making.
Examining education and training necessary and available for various careers.
Planning their future through Student Education Occupation Plan (S.E.O.P.) process, which is developed in cooperation with parents, counselors, and educators.

Since its beginning in 1987 and has had minor updates. In 1999 a major update was initiated with ongoing funding from the Utah State Legislature. The program has been very successful and has received national recognition.
